About the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB)

Information regarding the history of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) is below along with a quick description of the installations available and some general facts.

History

The Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) was created in the year 1968. The people that founded it wished to establish the four main beliefs of autonomy: the freedom to be able to choose staff to teach, to make entry accessible to every student, the freedom to produce its own plans of study and the freedom to manage the University's capital. The university is a growing university, but during its brief history it has progressed quickly.

The community of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) consists of 37,000 students who are undergraduates, 6,500 who are post-graduates, 2,700 are a mixture of both teachers and researchers and 1,200 who are administrative staff. There is a vast array of research and study offered by the UAB's eleven faculties which includes the Humanities and Social Sciences, Business Studies, Law, Experimental Sciences, Health Sciences, Art and Design, Engineering, and also Technology. The primary language is Catalan and the instruction at the UAB is spoken in this language. There are also an array of subjects in both English and Spanish available.

For its quality of teaching and research the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) is one of the very best education establishments throughout Spain and the European Union. The School of the Modern Languages (UAB Idiomes) is an integral piece of the university and specialises in teaching modern languages, Spanish included, to students worldwide and it combines its university teaching, which is of the highest standard, and the very latest technology. The courses are designed for students who come from a vast array of backgrounds, they are taught by only the highest qualified staff.

Spanish Courses History

Located in the heart of the city is the language school on the UAB Casa Convalescència campus, this is where the Spanish courses take place. This is an art nouveau building and was declared to be a world heritage sight by UNESCO in the year 1997. The establishment consists of 35 classrooms and 4 lecture halls which are all equipped with audiovisual and multi-media technology material. You will also discover a learning room which possesses high speed internet connections for the students to use completely free of any charge. The Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) recognises that foreign students have specific learning needs and this is why their courses are designed by experts of language. The programmes are very flexible allowing for numerous study options. If students wish to learn the Spanish language within a short duration than they can do so by taking an intensive Spanish course. Due to the comprehensive level range the course can take all levels of learners from the beginners to advanced speakers.

The Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) also allows students an option of studying subjects that are taught in English as part of an academic semester as this will gain the students study credits to take to their university at home. The courses are taught at either the Casa Convalescència campus or the Sarrià campus. There are numerous subjects to choose from including Economics, Spanish, Humanities and the culture of Spain or Business Spanish. Students with no prior knowledge of the Spanish language are also invited. The subjects are 45 hours long and they are taught in English, (apart from the Spanish Business course and the Spanish Language course). Upon completion of the whole programme the student will be awarded a certificate to be able to obtain credits for the subjects.

Every Autonomous Barcelona University (UAB) teacher and professor possesses university based qualifications and training in their specified subjects. They have been selected from the very best teachers throughout Europe due to their individual social and academic skills. The University in Barcelona and the UAB joins its commitment to society and holds a very strict policy of honesty toward the outside world.
