Plaza Mayor (Main Square)
One of the most popular attractions in Madrid is Plaza Mayor, which is a big, beautiful square that was built between 1617 and 1619 and was restored after being partly destroyed by a fire in 1790. In the middle of the square you can find a statue of Philip III, who started the construction of Plaza Mayor. The square was used for bullfights in the past but now you can find bars and cafés there. Although these places charge high costs for what they offer, it is worth to at least once, experience the cosy environment and the fun of watching the people walking past. Normally, a lot of artists are performing for the people in the square but, on Sundays, there is a market within the square for buying and selling old coins and stamps.
