History and Facts about Malaga University
Malaga University is a relatively young university that started its first activities at the beginning of the 1960’s. In 1963, the first faculty of economic and political science was established in the El Ejido campus, which is located in the centre of Malaga and still forms part of the university today. For the first 9 years, the university did not enjoy full university status, being finally granted in 1972 when a number of new faculties were established.
Today Malaga University has more than 43,000 students per year (including approximately 5000 foreign students) studying one of the 60 official degrees offered by the university in areas such as Humanities, Mathematics & Natural Sciences, Health Sciences and Social Sciences.
Initially Malaga University was located in the central El Ejido campus but, due to continuous expansion in the 80’s and early 90’s, new different faculties were established in various buildings throughout the centre.
In the late 90’s the new Teatinos campus was created with the idea of gathering the majority of faculties into one major campus area. Teatinos is today one of the most modern university campuses in Spain with all the main university installations like sport grounds, libraries, computer facilities, etc being housed there. Apart from the Teatinos campus, the El Ejido campus is still functioning as host to the faculty of Economics amongst others.
Spanish Courses History
The first Spanish language course at Malaga University for foreign students was organized in 1985.Initially the Spanish programs were held in a building in the historic centre of Malaga, where the philology faculty was also installed. When the faculty of philology was moved to the new Teatinos campus, the Spanish courses were relocated to a new building in the center of Malaga.
Today, the Spanish language courses are still held in the centre of Malaga, in a modern building located in the new part of the centre of Malaga.
More than 2000 foreign students participate in one of the different Spanish language and culture courses offered by Malaga University each year. The participating students come from all over the world, with the majority being European students (approx. 65%), American students (approx. 20%) and Asian and other students (approx. 15%)
The Spanish teachers at Malaga University are all highly qualified, having a university degree in Spanish philology and extensive experience in teaching the Spanish language. Apart from Spanish teachers, guest teachers from the main University regularly teach the higher levels of the Hispanic studies courses subjects like Spanish literature, art or history.
