Malaga Photos: Castillo de Gibralfaro
One of the first things that will catch your eye when you first enter Malaga is El Castillo de Gibralfaro. This Muslim fortress is built on a hill in the middle of the city and is the highest points in the centre by far. From the fortress you can see the whole city of Malaga, from the harbour in the south, to the big water dam in the north and from the fisherman’s neighbourhood of El Palo in the west, to the airport on the outskirts of the city in the east. The construction of the castle began in the 8th century by what is believed to be the Phoenicans but it was rebuilt and occupied by Sultan Yusuf I of Granada, in the 14th and 15th century. It served as a defensive fortress for the Moorish people and it is connected by a solid wall to the slightly newer Alcazaba castle which is situated lower on the hill. Besides enjoying the panoramic views from the walls you can admire the gardens within the castle walls and have a refreshing drink in the restaurant.
